I've often heard well-meaning people give advice to future generations, telling them to “just follow your heart.”
Though this seems both wise and loving, it's not always sound. Too many people have followed their heart only to be dismayed that their heart’s path doesn't allow them to earn a living; if they want to eat, they must choose a different path.
Instead of “follow your heart,” much better advice is to follow God.
Moses tells the people that God will never leave them or forsake them (Deuteronomy 31:6).
Interestingly, when the writers of Hebrews quote this verse, the context is about avoiding the love of money and being content with what we have—because God will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:4-6).
Consider This
“Hosea married Gomer even though she was undeserving. And he offered her redeeming love when she ran away. So it is with God and us.” -Peter DeHaan from More Old Testament Sinners and Saints
