In Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount, he says, “If you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?” (Matthew 5:47).
This reminds me of greeting people at church. Having visited scores of them, I've seen people greet well, greet poorly, or not greet at all.
Central to this is who they greet. Most are quick to greet friends, their own people. Yet, as Jesus says, even the pagans do that.
Instead, we should greet people we don't know—the visitors—even if it makes us uncomfortable. And I recommend we greet them first.
In this way, we’ll stand out from the pagans, as well as the people at most churches.
May we greet well.
