Jesus warns his disciples to guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees. They assume it’s because they forgot to bring bread (Matthew 16:11-12).
But that isn’t his point. Jesus uses yeast as a metaphor for teaching. His warning is to guard against the Pharisees’ and Sadducees’ instruction.
This isn’t to suggest that everything they taught was wrong, but some certainly was. The disciples needed to listen with discernment.
So, too, with us today.
We should follow the example of the Bereans who checked Scripture to verify what Paul was teaching them (Acts 17:11).
We need to watch out for wrong teaching. We must scrutinize what our teachers say with what Scripture says. If their teaching doesn’t align with the Bible, we should beware.
