Some people have a goal of being financially independent. There’s nothing wrong with this, yet we must hold it loosely, knowing that we should always depend on God—and not money (Matthew 6:24).
For those who become financially independent, however, it’s what follows that matters. One worldly idea is FIRE, an acronym that means financially independent, retire early.
Instead, let me propose a counter acronym: FIVE. It stands for financially independent, volunteer extensively.
If we’re financially independent, we don’t need to earn money. We can donate our time to causes that matter. We can be intentional about doing what grows God’s kingdom.
May we seek his kingdom first (Matthew 6:33).
A wise retirement gives more time to do just that as we volunteer extensively.
