Paul tells the Philippian church to continue to work out their salvation (Philippians 2:12-13).
He doesn’t say to work for their salvation. They already have it. They received salvation through Jesus by God’s grace; they can’t earn it (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Therefore, they don’t need to work for it. It’s already done.
Instead, they work out their salvation. This is in response to what Jesus did for them. It’s a way of saying “thank you” for the ultimate gift he gave them.
This is serious business. We must work out our salvation with fear and trembling, knowing that as we do, God works in us. This will fulfill his good purpose in us and through us.
But we must do our part to work it out.
